A Letter from the President

Diligence through COVID-19

To our valued sponsors and supporters,

My name is Tara D’Souza. I am excited to be leading the team this upcoming school year as the new President of Illini Solar Car. From the beginning, being a member of this team has been an adventure. I started out as a timid freshman on the Electrical group. I spent most meetings staring wide-eyed at the older members, trying to soak up as much of their knowledge as my brain could handle. That summer, I was equally surprised and excited to be chosen as a member of our 2019 Formula Sun Grand Prix pit crew. During that race, I learned so much and I found a true love and passion for being a part of the solar car community. From then on, I knew I had joined the right team for me. My sophomore year, I continued to work with the Electrical group and also stepped into the role of treasurer. From there, I was introduced into the world of business and operations. In no time at all, I realized what a big task it really is to run a solar car team.

As my junior year rolled around, so did the COVID-19 pandemic. Our big hopes for the coming year were halted in their tracks. Instead, we had to adjust and adapt, something our team has proven to be excellent at over the past year. As the then-Director of Operations, I had my work cut out for me that fall - we needed to keep the team motivated and strong amidst a myriad of new and unforeseen challenges. We still had a car to finish and the possibility of attending the 2021 American Solar Challenge. However, the dedication and innovative spirit of the members of our team kept our goals moving forward and made my job easy.

We started off the year with the most successful recruiting season in the history of our team. After a series of virtual recruiting and informational sessions, over 200 students expressed initial interest in joining Illini Solar Car. A month or so later, fifty of them completed our fully virtual onboarding process and officially joined the team. Thanks to the diligent efforts of all of our group leads, every new member was taught and walked through the basics of the work they might encounter. They then jumped straight into projects for our new car.

Thanks to the rigorous and effective testing program at the University of Illinois, we were able to continue reduced and distanced work at our garage. We made steady progress on the new car throughout the months. All the while, we continued having virtual group meetings with all of our members, keeping everyone engaged and working whether they were on campus or taking classes from home across the world.

As we dove into the colder months of the year, work on the new car continued. After countless hours of around-the-clock work, it began to look and work like a real solar car. This was just in time for our grand unveiling of the new car, Brizo. Although the virtual event was delayed and different from the in-person event we had scheduled last year, we were all so excited to finally get to share what we had all been working on. Hundreds of people tuned in from around the world to listen and learn about Brizo during our live stream.

Now, as the school year has come to a close, we are nearing very exciting times for our team. After a tough year, the lights at the end of the tunnel are bright and exciting. Our second car, Brizo, will make its debut at the American Solar Challenge this summer. Accompanying the car will be our largest race crew yet and we can’t wait to see how Brizo performs. This fall, we hope to regain a sense of normalcy and start to resume in person team meetings. After over a year of seeing members through a computer screen, I look forward to meeting, speaking, and innovating face-to-face once again.

Despite a challenging year, we’ve emerged bigger and stronger, and, through it all, I continue to be impressed by my fellow teammates. I am constantly learning from them and I am humbled to have been chosen to lead such a bright and inspiring group of students. I am so proud of the work we’ve accomplished and can’t wait to see what the future holds for our team.

Unveiling Brizo

Unveiling Brizo was an event more than 1.5 years in the making. Through numerous technical challenges and a global pandemic and with the invaluable support of our corporate and campus sponsors, our team successfully revealed the second generation of the Illini Solar Car to the public. The journey from ideas in the heads of our now-alumni to a sleek, 5 meter car has been a unique experience for all of our team members, and we’re tremendously proud of our accomplishments thus far and for Brizo to hit the road and prove itself as the top tier car we know it is.

Supplier shortages, manufacturing delays, and reduced workforce aside, we had our work cut out for us to finish Brizo in time for our March unveiling event. In the week before March 6th, team members were at the garage practically around-the-clock installing Brizo’s array, putting the finishing touches on the main shells, sanding composite material, and applying the wrap and decaling that gives Brizo its signature look. Our business & media groups were hard at work coordinating with the ECE Department to prepare for the event itself, shooting and editing videos, and planning out our display day.

Our team took advantage of the beautiful weather on March 5th to bring Brizo to campus from our garage and spend the day taking poster- and background-worthy photos of the car around campus - stopping at the iconic ECE building, Grainger Engineering Library, Alma Mater statue, and more. We look forward to getting Brizo back on campus as the weather improves, so stay tuned for more glam shots around lovely Urbana-Champaign!

The next day the team brought the car to the Electrical and Computer Engineering Building in preparation for our 12PM unveiling event, livestreamed on YouTube. Though the team faced some technical hiccups with the production, the unveiling itself was a great success - our speakers and panelists addressed an audience in the hundreds and gave a unique first-look at Brizo - fully liveried and on display in the ECEB atrium. If you missed our unveiling event, you can check out the recording on our YouTube channel HERE.

"I’ll admit it - this event was challenging to pull off, and the technical difficulties were frustrating. Seeing Brizo sparkle in the sunlight, though - that made all those long hours at the garage worth it. "
